Aiding The Most Vulnerable

In Sri Lanka, as the healthcare system struggles with severe shortages of essential supplies, those with disabilities are finding it increasingly difficult to access the care and support they need.

The scarcity of medical equipment, coupled with widespread poverty, has forced many to resort to desperate measures, some elderly individuals are even using broomsticks as makeshift walking sticks.

This is the heartbreaking reality for many and underscores the urgent need for support.

The Crisis in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis, leaving millions in desperate need of food, fuel, and medical supplies.

According to the United Nations, nearly 5.7 million people urgently require humanitarian assistance, with 1.7 million at the highest risk.

The economic turmoil has crippled the healthcare system, causing severe shortages of essential supplies and limiting access to proper care.

Our immediate action and external aid are critical to stabilise the healthcare system and provide relief to the most vulnerable, the elderly and disabled.

Following the Sunnah

As one of the sacred months mentioned in the Qur’an, Muharram is a time to renew our intentions and increase in our worship. But it is also a time to reflect on the legacy left by the Prophet ﷺ.

He ﷺ said, “It is out of reverence to Allah to respect the white-headed (aged) Muslim.” (Abu Dawud) and “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and esteem to our elderly.” (At-Tirmidhi).

From this, we know we must support the most vulnerable in our community.

Note: At MAA, we believe we have a duty to fight injustice at every level, big and small. It’s not enough to give aid to the most vulnerable and marginalised after harm has befallen them; we must stand up for them and empower their voices. To fulfil our collective obligation, MAA may dedicate a portion of your sadaqah donations to this cause to create change and dismantle the forces that harm the most marginalised.
