A Day in the Life of Prophet Muhammad (saw) - Part 2
In our previous post, we discussed highlights of a typical day from Fajr to Asr in the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). If you haven't read it yet, please click here.
Today, let us continue this series and go through some of the highlights from Maghrib to Isha. Hope you find it beneficial!
Practical tip: Food plays a major role in our lives these days. Bad eating habits are also the cause of a lot of our diseases! The Prophet (Peace be upon him) taught his ummah something to protect them from diseases caused by eating and drinking. He said: “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” Let us try to follow this authentic hadith every day!
Practical tip: Sleep as early as you can after Isha and try to do at least two units of Tahajjud prayer each night. The rewards are amazing!
As we come to the end of a typical day in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), it is evident how productive each chunk of his day was and how he blended it beautifully with being conscious about the five daily prayers and keeping his life in line with Islam. The best takeaway for me is that despite the enormous responsibility on him from so many different angles, his day was more or less stress-free and simple. He focused on making the best out of every moment and did his best in everything he was involved in and then put his trust in Allah SWT. In other words, the key approach was in attaining Ihsan (excellence)!
In this day and age, no doubt our jobs demand different working hours and our activities may seem different to what the Prophet (Peace be upon him) was used to during those times. That, however, is no excuse to not follow his example! Even today, there are several successful people who are able to incorporate the prophetic Sunnah in their daily routines and lead fantastic, successful and productive lives. Let us try to be those people in sha Allah!

Maghrib/Sunset
After performing Maghrib prayer, it was time for dinner for the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him), which was also usually the second and the main meal of his day. His companions at times gathered at his home for dinner and for some friendly discussions. Food was only a simple necessity in prophet’s life. He never criticized food at all. If he liked it, he would eat it, and if he did not like it, he would leave it and not say anything. On a lighter note, he would repeatedly urge his guests to eat, as generous hosts do, and as is seen in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah, narrated by al-Bukhaari, where the Prophet (Peace be upon him) repeatedly said to him, “Drink!” and he kept telling him to drink until he (the guest) said, “By the One Who sent you with the truth, I have no more room for it!”Practical tip: Food plays a major role in our lives these days. Isha/Night
The Prophet (Peace be upon him) usually delayed his Isha prayer a little and once done with it, the congregation was immediately dispersed so they could retire for the day. While returning home, on some nights he visited the companions Abu Bakr or Umar to discuss or catch up with some politics or if nothing important was there to discuss he headed home to have a quick word with his family and then sleep. Around midnight, he would awake and proceed with his nightly Tahajjud prayers. Towards the end of the night, he would wake up his wife to pray ‘Witr’ and then take a short nap till the Fajr adhan.Practical tip: Sleep as early as you can after Isha and try to do at least two units of Tahajjud prayer each night.
